Stress concentration is likely to happen in lattice structure because lattice has many small geometry features, especially near the joints where lattice beams come together.

However, it is difficult to measure stress/strain from test because the geometry is small or curved and attaching strain gauges can be difficult, if it is not impossible.

Predicting lattice stress using traditional FEA simulation is also challenging:

  • 1D elements can simulate the lattice beams, but they cannot predict the stress concentration at joints accurately because they cannot represent the exact geometry at joints.
  • Simulating lattice with 3D elements is extremely expensive because it requires very small elements to get accurate stress – preparing the model will take long time and solving the model is computationally intensive.
