Extracting Automatically HyperView Hotspot Results in HyperStudy

Altair HyperStudy™ version 2021.1 offers a new HyperView model type that enables users with an easy way to extract results obtained through HyperView.

In HyperView, Hotspot Finder tool helps engineers find critical regions in the model. The hotspots can be stored in an *.mvw session file. Then the same session file will be used as the resource file in the HyperView Model to extract those hotspots automatically at each evaluation from HyperStudy.

In the example below a bike frame model is solved with Altair OptiStruct™ and the hotspots are identified in Altair HyperView™ using searching criteria defined by the user. The results obtained on each Contour Plot (Displacement, Element Stresses) are displayed in separate windows and the session is saved (hotspots.mvw).

Note: The results extraction from multiple windows is supported on HyperStudy side. For each contour to be extracted, the user will set a window in HyperGraph, plot the contour, and save the HotSpot with relevant options.

Among options, the user can control the selection. For instance, for static analysis, it is recommended to ignore elements connected to rigid elements. In the Hotspot Finder, user can ignore elements by type (in that case RIGID and RIGID LINKS) and the first range of connected elements.

The HyperStudy setup includes the following steps:

1. Add model1 - HyperMesh defined with BikeFrame.hm2hst resource file exported from HyperMesh (version 2021.1 or above).

2. Add model2 - HyperView defined with hotspots.mwv file previously created in the working directory.

This will populate two subdirectories m_1 and m_2 and the user has to bring the h3d resulting from model1 into model2 directory within step 3 below.

3. Link the models by setting up the transfer of the bike.h3d file from model 1 to model 2.

  • From model1, define the h3d file as Output resource
  • In model2, set a Link resource and pick the h3d file to copy it from model1 to model2

4. Run the definition.

Note: It is needed to run once model 1 alone in order to create the bike.h3d, which will be used as a linked resource in model 2 – HyperView.

The HyperView results are automatically extracted and can be used in design exploration and optimization studies, for instance to improve the design in order to reduce the mass while limiting the stress and displacement in critical regions.
