solid bolt modelling with pretension

Hi,

I want model a solid meshed bolt in an assembly with pretension and contact stress (at bolt head contact area) before applying actual loadcase. I was thinking of making an implicit run for this part and then go for an explicit run for actual loadcase.

Kindly let me know about the methodology and also how to assign pre-tension in the solid modelled bolt.

Hi Gopal,

You can try with implicit options in RADIOSS and can couple with the explicit run. But implicit has some limitations with pretension loading.

As a workaround, for Type 32 spring you can assign function for load vs time, ramp and hold the load and meanwhile you can add the sequential load to continue the run.

I was using type 32 spring but I think we might not be able to capture the contact between bolt head and structure to capture contact stress. Thus, was making a solid bolt head but now want to know how to apply pretension in this bolt ?

Hi Gopal,

In RADIOSS pretension is applied only through Type 32 spring. And normally the contact forces can be captured.

Please try the same.

I want to model a spring in 3D elements. Please let me how to model the same (property,material and stiffness assigning)

Hi,

Springs are usually modeled with 1d elements where we can assign stiffness in required directions.

Do you want to model it with 3D elements?. Please let me know what analysis you are trying to do.

Explicit analysis need to be done for the release springs to find out the stress level at the spring.
