As the year draws to a close, it feels like a good time to take stock of the achievements of 2022… and there have been many!

One of the most relevant ones has been the 2nd Altair Technology Conference dedicated to the Discrete Element Method (ATCx DEM). The event took place on Wednesday 30th November 2022, with nearly 1800 registrations and 1000 live attendees; delivered over three time zones and available in eight languages.

The conference was a great success and a wonderful opportunity to interact with customers and collaborators; sharing not only a long list of customer success cases of using our technology to develop or improve equipment and processes, but also we had the opportunity to share more details about new capabilities recently introduced in EDEM.

If you missed the event or want to view a particular talk on-demand, you can do so now by accessing the Altair Resource Library here.

The most popular topics during the event were the Breakage model and performance of our new multi-GPU CUDA Solvers.

The Breakage model was developed after a long collaboration with Prof. Marcelo Tavares from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, based on his long experience in the topic. This allowed us to bring into EDEM the most accurate model of particle breakage available in literature, backed up by one of the most recognized research groups.

The performance increase of the multi-GPU CUDA solver has been our most important advancement of the year for EDEM. First introduced in 2022.0, our team have been working hard to enable most of the capabilities already available in EDEM to work with the new solver and benefit from its high-performance boost during the following releases.

As proof of this, NVIDIA, Altair’s technology partner, has published results of EDEM’s amazing performance using NVIDIA hardware to power large and complex particle simulations with CUDA-based single- and multi-GPU solvers.

These two topics haven’t been the only new introductions during this year. During 2022, we have made excellent progress, not only taking our software to the highest level of performance for Discrete Element Method technology in the market, but also adding state-of-the-art new capabilities:

With EDEM 2022.0 we released the new multi-GPU CUDA solver engine, together with a dedicated database for powder material models, state-of-the-art new physics models and enabling the possibility of unlimited post-processing capabilities through EDEMpy.

In EDEM 2022.1 we continued enabling capabilities for the multi-GPU CUDA solver, added a new type of advanced post-processing with our Continuum Analysis capability, and enhanced customization through EDEMpy.

For EDEM 2022.2, we are proud to announce that we are continuing to enable capabilities for the multi-GPU CUDA solver, which increases the performance even further. We are also adding special analysis capabilities for flexible-fibres. More details will be revealed soon.

All that is left for me to say now is to send my very best wishes to you and yours for a healthy and prosperous New Year! My colleagues and I look forward to meeting and working with you in 2023.
