Durham University Solar Car Update
A key aspect of DUEM is the simultaneous work on two different projects, solar car and formula student. Work is continuing on the structural design of the new Solar Car for entry in the 2015 World Solar Challenge, by a team of L3 students for their design project. DUEM are moving to a carbon fibre monocoque instead of a steel space frame chassis to reduce the weight of the Solar Car, increasing efficiency. OptiStruct has been used to optimise the structural design of the car, and so reducing the mass of the car without compromising its strength and durability. Physical tests of different carbon fibre samples have been used to ensure that the complex material properties are modeled correctly. Don't forget to check out their case study HERE.
