Altair Inspire running extremely slow and crashing

Good day,

I have installed Altair Inspire on a different (more capable) computer than my own pc to run a topology optimisation. Inspire opens up much faster, but anything after that is extremely slow. Text displays as black boxes in the model window and Inspire crashes immediately without an error report when I try to start a new sketch (as soon as I select the sketch plane). Opening up an existing model takes several minutes as well as trying to hide/show any components.

System specs are:

Windows 10 Enterprise

64 GB RAM

Intel Xeon E5-1620 v4 running at 3.5 GHz

NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 GPU

Any advice would be appreciated.

i would check if the graphic card drivers are up-to-date, and when Inspire is loaded, make sure the system is using your dedicated nvidia card to launch Inspire. Sometimes, there is an onboard video card that is used to launch the product instead of the dedicated card.

Also make sure your files are in a local folder, and not in a network drive, for example.

These are the checks i would suggest.

it seems like the graphics card is running on the latest available drivers from nvidia, but it does not seem like Inspire is using it, at least not when viewing it in the Task Manager. Do you have any recommendations to rectify this?

I have tried manually assigning it in the nvidia control panel with the available options and in the windows graphics settings with no luck thusfar.

Usually I go to nvidia control panel and change the 'global settings' to use 'High performance'.

Under Select a Task select 'Manage 3D Settings. ...
Select the 'Global Settings tab' and choose 'High-performance NVIDIA processor' under the preferred graphics processor drop-down bar.

Or have you tried changin only inspire?

I have tried only changing Inspire's settings before.

I have now changed the global settings to high performance and selected the nvidia GPU in them as well, but I do not notice any difference in Inspire or on the Task Manager.

If this is not graphic related, then maybe trying reainstalling Inspire might be helpful, i dunno.

My task manager does not show a GPU assigned to Inspire at all. The nvidia GPU is also the only GPU installed in the PC, and is the only one visible in the Task Manager. I tried reinstalling Inspire with no luck thusfar.

I did some digging online and found that the GeForce 730 series is quite old by now with many variants no longer supported by nvidia. The latest available drivers are installed, but they date from March, 2018. I'm wondering if the GPU is just not compatible with Inspire?

Maybe that's the case. If your driver's date is from 2018, probably your graphic card is from <2016?

Do you have any other video card available?

I do not have another card available, but I might be able to ask the department if they would consider upgrading to a more modern graphics card. I'm pretty sure the problems are graphics card related at this stage.

I have now been able to run a FE analysis on a model I set up previously. The analysis runs fine, but I cannot view the results. I might just use this pc to run the analysis and use my personal computer to view the results for now.
