cohesive zone modeling a long story...

A few days ago I came across the following document:

If you google 'optistruct delamination' or 'hyperworks cohesive zone modeling' or any other similar combination of words on the same topic, chances are that you will get results on questions submitted on this forum even 8 years ago. Why? Because we had to reach version 2019.1 in order to get support within optistruct of the cohesive material definition (MCOHE) and the equivalent property card (PCOHE), still without support of 2D elements. Consider that all other big players in FEA had the method supported since 2012 (or before?). Not to mention that there is still no tutorial (Double cantilever beam is a classic one) on how to use this 'newly' adopted methodology with hypermesh/optistruct and process the results with hyperview.

Cohesive zone modelling is one of the most complicated problems in computational mechanics since, as you know, it involves a huge discontinuity in the displacement field and a huge singularity to compute the stress !

I think it's normal to devote a significant amount of time to develop a robust solver in order to treat this kind of problem ....

As stated by @FaroukM, this is not an easy implementation to perform.

Besides, by 2012, OS NL itself was still not fully developed,yet. So, development had to ensure that everything was in place to bring this and other implementations.

Concerning the tutorials, yes, there's a gap between the solver release of a feature and having a tutorial for it. Sometimes this is related to the gap on solver vs interface, as it takes some time to implement the needed cards into HyperMesh for full support of this particular feature. So in order to avoid having a tutorial based on 'unsupported cards', the documentation team waits for HM to have it in place, and then build the tutorial, sometimes even including already some enhancements.
