Inspire does not open Part / Step created in Solid works

Hello,

i created a part in Solidworks which i then tried to open in Altair Inspire 2022.2- Optistruct. The part name shows up on the object tree but the model does not show. The mass of the part is defined as 0. The Solidworks part does not show any kind of problems within Solidworks. I can also open the STEP in other CAD Software like Siemens NX. I actually managed to open the part somehow once in Altair. I changed the material in Solidworks from Metal to ABS which is included in the Altair Database. Somehow that temporarly fixed the problem and i could open the part in Altair. Interestingly that also only worked once. Now even with ABS as a material setting it wont open the part.

I tried to run an FEM Analysis in the part that opened but Altair refused to complete the run because of "mesh intersections".

I added the part to this question.

I hope anybody has any tips for me.

Hi Dogan,

The procedure for importing CAD into Inspire is through File >> Import. Your STEP file does as you say and shows no geometry, however the SLDPRT imports without issue. Disclaimer: I opened it using Inspire 2023.1, but that should still work just fine in 2020.2.

When imported, the default material is applied (Steel AISI 304) to your Zugwand_backup_3 so you may have to reassign the material. After setting the thickness (3mm chosen randomly) the mass can be calculated (hover next to the mass field in the property editor). See the image below for proof:

I dont really understand the "thickness" setting. If i imagine a completely different part there might be places with 50 mm thickness vs 1 mm thickness in other places. What would be the input value in that case?How does the setting work?

Hi Dogan,

When the SLDPART was imported it must have assumed it was a shell body. The mass and inertia was not able to be calculated until a thickness was set.

Try exporting the part instead as a STEP, STMOD, IGES, or STL. When imported, those file types will calculate the mass and inertia properly.
