I'm a relatively new linux user and I'm looking to install HW on my research workstation. It's currently running Ubuntu 12.04. Is this a supported platform for the HW suite? If so, which platform should I select?

You should be able to run HW on ubuntu 12.04
In the platform selection, select linux.
Read the installation guide carefully before installing.
