HPC server setup

Hi,

I am setting up a new High performance machine as a server which will run all high fidelity FE and CFD models. What is the best way to set this up?

It is a dual CPU (Epyc 7313) with multiple RTX 4000 GPU's and up to 2GB ram.

Do I install Hyperworks directly onto the server OS or is it better to install Windows on a virtual machine and run hyper works of the VM?

I am running Windows server 2019 as the server OS, will this be compatible with the latest HW?

Any guidance will be appreciated, some high level bullet points will focus my research.

Thank you,

Casper

    Hi Casper,

i'm not specialist in HPC systems, but usually I see more Linux based systems as the OS.

Depending on your demands in terms of users, it might be nice to have some job scheduler such as PBS for controlling the job queue.

Hi Adriano, Thank you for your input, but I first need some understanding of how to set this up on a server. The forum has nothing. So I just install HW directly onto the server is or only the solvers and the GUI on a VM and is incompatible with Win server 2019? I am aware of PBS, but I want to get the system up and running first before adding a new element.

I found the below, but nothing on windows server. https://2021.help.altair.com/2021/hwdesktop/altair_help/topics/getting_started/platform_support_r.htm

It is difficult to give general advice for HPC as there are so many variables, as Adriano said, the vast majority of 'Cluster' installations are done under linux, and usually only the solvers are installed (not the GUI packages)

You should check the 'advanced install guide' for guidance on the solver installs

If you are struggling I recommend you contact your local Altair help who may be able to provide more assistance and/or put you in touch with someone who is an HPC specialist
