Contact radius in Tavares breakage model

Hi!

I'm working on the simulation of a gyratory crusher with the Tavares breakage model with EDEM 2023.1. When updating to version 2024.1, the software now requires manual definition of the contact radius.

I did't find information about recommended values of contact radius or the influence of this parameter for this specific application. So, I would like to ask if there is more information about the contact radius and recommended values.

Regards,

    Hi Manuel,

The Breakage Model has been improved recently with the 2024.1 version. The Model requires a contact radius to determine when the contact has ended. If the contact ends and the particles contact radii no longer overlap, this last contact point is not included in the energy calculation for breakage.

You can add a contact radius large enough to ensure you can detect a negative physical overlap. Please check the tutorial attached, where we used a value 4% greater than the physical radius.

    Regards,

    Cesar

    Hello Manuel,

To add to what my colleague @Cesar Barreto said. From 2024.0 an error is shown if there is no defined contact radius or if it is equal to the physical radius. This is to allow the model to know when the collision has finished (before the contact is destroyed) to the update the damage on the particle. This ensures that the model works as intended. Something small like around 5% should be enough. Hope that this helps.

    Kind regards

    Ignacio
