Altair Embed Crashing - AltairLogo.vsm for Altair Global Digital Twin Contest

I am attempting to run the example Altair Logo Example code for the Altair Global Digital Twin Contest that extracts the Altair logo from a supplied PNG file; however, every time I attempt to set the path for the image, the program crashes and states that "vissim32.exe" has stopped working.

Following the instructions from here under "Example for Task A", I have downloaded the example files to be used with my student edition of Altair Embed (version 2020.3 Build 57), and followed the process of supplying the file path of the "ContourToXY.dll" addon. When I try to double-click on the image block and specify the image file path, the program crashes and states that "vissim32.exe has stopped working".

I have already attempted restarting the computer and reinstalling the software; however, it appears that the uninstaller does not work properly, as when I reinstalled the software, I didn't select any addons to be installed, yet the program still reports that the addons cannot be found. I even manually deleted the Altair Embed folder, yet the application still persists in my Add or Remove Programs menu.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and I would be more than happy to provide any additional information if necessary.

Thank you!

Thank you for your reply! When I initially installed the software, I checked all of the addons to be installed, including OpenVision. I then uninstalled and reinstalled the software and checked only OpenVision, and I got several errors on startup stating that the addons I had since uninstalled could not be found. I then uninstalled and reinstalled again in accordance with your advice, but this time I installed in the default install location with all addons checked. Unfortunately, the error persists.

Thank you for your reply! Yes I did restart embed after loading the dll. I attempted to change the image in the Read Image example; however, the issue is the same - when I select the image, the the program crashes and states that "vissim32.exe has stopped working".

    Ethan,

This is very much an installation issue, you need to ensure a clean uninstall is done and install with only the opencv add on checked,

maybe delete the folders yourself as you mention? also redownload the exe to be sure the exe is not corrupted, we can do an md5 checksum after you download as well.

Note you can extract coordinates using any other tool too, task A only needs the compose files to be submitted.

Alright that makes sense - thank you! For the clean uninstall, I've uninstalled the software from Windows's Add or Remove Programs menu; however, after the software is seemingly uninstalled, this list says that it's still on the computer. I also delete the Altair Embed install directly from my hard drive. Even despite doing this, it seems that my preferences (including addons) persist when I reinstall. That is, the addon list has the entry to the additional dll referenced above that I specified in the previous installation. Is there a folder or other configuration file I'm missing? Also, what's the procedure for performing an md5 checksum?

In the meantime, I'll look to use other software to extract the path!

Thank you again for all of your assistance!

It is possible that the executable/s were corrupted on download and hence you will need to completely uninstall the software and redownload the executables, It is important to first try deleting the downloaded file and downloading it again.

If you still face issues, to make sure the file is not damaged on download, run an md5 checksum on the downloaded file (just google md5 checksum):

    1. Double click / run the Winmd5 checksum executable (download win md5 a freeware from the internet, please note we cannot be responsible for external content and info)
    1. Select the executable by clicking on the browse button or drag and drop the file into the window

After running the MD5 checksum in your computer, kindly see if your MD5 checksum value matches the one here: 8e42173ef6d74aad61fb53fbad423fcc

    2

be sure that during the installation the following Module was selected:

    image

also note that if you have installed already and had not selected openvision, just rerun the exe and choose the openvision module, there is no need to uninstall embed.

    3

    Once the installation is done

We you will need to add the ContourToXY.dll into embed, this will prepare Embed for reading contours of images, extracting the contour coordinates, and saving it to a .csv file.

    • Open Altair Embed > go to Edit > select Preferences, a window as shown below will appear > Go to Addons tab

    image

    • Scroll down and click on ... > Browse and select the ContourToXY.dll (ContourToXY.dll file is provided along with this document) > Click OK

    image

    • Close and Restart Embed (important)

this is described in the video in the training material section as well for task A

Hi, I had the same problem.

I reinstalled all the Altair programs in the same folder (Embed too, previously it was in another folder under root) and now it works just fine. Hope it helps!
