Does above bolt connection work as sliding along slot or rotating about bolt? Representation is partially around the bolt but slot sides are flat.
Hello Greg,
From the configuration shown, the bolt-in-slot connection will behave primarily as a sliding connection rather than a true rotation pin. A proper rotation pin requires a close fitting circular hole that constrains translation while allowing rotation about the bolt axis. In contrast, a straight slot with flat sides permits linear movement along the slot direction. This means the joint retains a degree of freedom in translation along the slot axis, and any rotation that occurs would be secondary and dependent on contact conditions, friction, or deformation rather than being the intended primary motion. Therefore, unless the slot ends or additional constraints prevent sliding, the connection functions mechanically as a sliding joint rather than a pure rotational pin.
