Ruled Mesh - Hyperworks 2023
Is it possible to create Ruled Mesh without creating surface in New Hyperworks 2023 as like the older versions?
If yes, how ?
I feel the new way of creating Ruled mesh is not efficient like the previous versions.

Hello,
You need to use the linear ruled : Topology > Ruled > Linear and check mesh.

Hi Marine,
I was successful in finding and using the tool.
But it is not efficient as the the one in older gui and no option to create mesh without creating the surface or to delete the surface.

If needed you can delete the surface without deleting the elements.
This ruled tool allows you to not have a orphan mesh, you will have access to all the tools related also to geometry.

Hi,
It would be useful if there is an option for the user to decide on whether to create elements by creating surface or without surface.
For the sake of elements being associated with the surface (which may not be needed in for all / all cases) , there is a sacrifice on the speed and the quality.
Let me know your opinion.

I have to agree with this statement.
In legacy HyperMesh, I am able to connect two panels using the "Ruled" tool to create an element connection very quickly.
I am now trying to use the tool in the new HyperMesh, and I have to wait for the surface to mesh then I have to come out of the tool to delete the surface, only for me to go back into the tool to do the next row and repeat the process.
Given I have to do this 100s of times on a single model, the new process is very arduous and it seems there is no alternative. If I wanted a surface in there, I'd use the surface creation tools. The Ruled tool shouldn't need to have surfaces created in it too.

FE Geometry isn't good enough either. It cannot link paths of elements.

Same opinion. This feature is cobbled. Unfinished.

In my case the number 1 problem is that ruled by path doesn't work. I could accept the stupid manual deleting of unwanted surfaces, but joining elements 1 by 1 because path doesn't work is a show stop.

This works just fine using FE Geometry as shown below just as before with legacy. In fact you don't even need to use by path because FE geometry works directly on topology selection, just use line.

That is for a streight line topology. But 99.9999999% of times we do not have either straight lines or straight FEM edged. Please show ruled FEM path working on a complex curved FEM edge.

Yes, that works as well.
Select the lines as you would a node path. That's really all selecting by topology is, a simplified way of selecting FE date (nodes/elems) using Topology definition (surfs/lines).

I have attached a video to show how crooked the Ruled mesh option is.
In the first part of the video, dissociation of nodes from surfaces are done which may be skipped. (It was suggested in another case where there was a trouble in ruled mesh ).
But you can clearly see after 1:21 how the ruled elements are formed apart from the selected nodes.

I would probably use a Patch in your case with FE Geometry

A buddy explained me that in our case to get the ruled by path working we need to leave the drop down optional menu open. It is a stupid bug, since it tends to cover the view of the elements on which you are working on. But it does make the path.

Ruled (with CAD, mesh only, or FE Geometry) will work.
Or Spline (instead of Patch) with FE Geometry
FE Geometry is just easier to work with if you have only mesh.

Can you share the model you are using as I am not able to reproduce any issue with mine.
Are you using the latest version (2023.1)

Indeed, anybody willing to experiment with the new GUI should have the very last version.
All in all, getting used to the new GUI is not too difficult. It takes a few days to a week. Everything is well explained, and it is possible to feel the usability improvements.
But then there are the bugs! Which are still under reduction.

Hi All,
Today I encountered a situation again with the ruled mesh which is annoying.
In the attached picture, I am about to create tetra solid welds between green and red plates. In order to do that, I need to fill the gap and create a skin for the weld. As I tried create a ruled mesh, you can see the yellow elements. A new surface is created and the mesh too. And I am surprised that the nodes have no connectivity with the existing elements.
