Compatibility between FEKO 2018 & FEKO 2017

We are renewing our license for Hyperworks and I had a question about compatibility. I had a trial version of FEKO 2018, saved a file and attempted to later open the file in our current FEKO 2017 version, just to make sure everything was working. I was tagged with a compatibility issue stating that the 2018 file format could not be opened. Is there no backwards compatibility?

    I know nothing about FEKO.

But with Hyperworks (Hypermesh) you can read everything with 2017.2.2 (latest) release.

However, you can not read 2017 model with old release 14, 13 or 12 for example.

    Is there no backwards compatibility?

Yes there is. But what you are asking about is not backwards compatibility, but forwards compatibility. Backwards compatibility is the ability to open old models in new versions. Forwards compatibility is about the ability to open models from new versions in older versions. As you have noticed, FEKO does not support forwards compatibility in general (most software doesn't) - how would the old software know what to do with the new features stored in the newer version.
