What is the file that controls the cycle of colors for the auto color panel?

auto color are built-in capabilities, there is no config file that can be tuned.

Did you have a specific request about colors?

In the past (2017 or earlier), I remember modifying a file that limited the colors that would be used when using the color panel (auto color), because I was trying to avoid very bright or dark colors that made some comps difficult to see.

For another color issue, when using the check elems panel (assign plot), I figured out how to modify or create another "standard.8" file to fit my needs. I'm able to change the number of colors and colors. I wish there was a way to tie them to numeric values, so that every time I interrogate aspect ratio, the min and max and everything in between will always be the same. Hyperview seems to do this well, but I don't know if Hypermesh does this.
