Since last week, I have lost the ribbon. instead, I get a vertical toolbar on the right side of the screen with what I imagine would be the function names usually displayed in the ribbon. How do I get the ribbon back?

This is a special mode for HW and is never used by Inspire. Possibility is that you have both HW and Inspire installed which are sharing the settings.xml under .altair directory and the setting was modified in HW and later Inspire was invoked.
Try to set the "Use panels" entry to "0" in the .altair/<version>/hwx/settings.xml file, this should fix the problem.
