Good evening , I'm an Italian student , and I apologize for the language . I'm studying the final year of mechanical engineering and I have to take an exam about Hypermesh. The exam consists of an exercise (it can be a static analysis, thermal analysis, non-linear analysis, dynamic analysis, etc...) and the professor requires, in the examination delivery, file.hm, file.h3d and file.fem. The question is: what is the purpose of file.fem to evaluate the exam grade? They are not sufficient the file.hm and file.h3d ? Thanks a lot.

file.fem is input data for Altair's Optistruct solver.

Ok, thank you, but i've already figured that out. Now the question is: if the teacher can valutate my test by checking only .hm and .H3D files, then what is the sake of the .fem file?
I mean, are there more specific information the teacher can reach out by inputing the .fem file? Please list me, if you kindly can, the info that can be retrieved by the .fem file only.

From .hm model file you can always export into .fem for the solver.

I don't know how your teacher do to evaluate your work. But when I'm student, I do everything my teacher ask me :)/emoticons/default_smile.png' srcset='/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x' title=':)' width='20'>

.fem file is an ASCII file and can be readable as a text format and .hm is not. This could be one of the reasons?

Thanks for the answer:) Yes, I know it can be read as a text file; are there additional information that can be retrieved only by opening the text file? I don't understand what is file.fem's utility to evaluate exam's grade, and what information teacher can extract from file.fem and not from other files (.hm and.h3d). I would like to understand what additional/extra information can be retrieved by the .fem file only (by inputing/exporting it into Hypermesh or maybe by reading it as a text format). What do you think may be the reason why teacher asks .fem file in addition to others (.hm and .h3d)? Excuse me if I insist , but for me is important to understand.

.fem file can be used directly by OptiStruct solver, but not .hm nor .h3d.

So if your teacher has no Hypermesh (he has only Optistruct), how he can run the analysis ?

Hello. The .hm file is the file which you used for pre-processing, the .fem file is the file you need for running the job and doing the processing, and the .h3d file is the file which you can see your results (post-processing).

    Regards.
