I am finding difficulty in selecting proper element type as the adhesive has to show shearing and can you please suggest me the best way to represent the adhesive elemets as in with contacts or equivalence it other components?
What solver are you using?
I am only familiar with RADIOSS. The best (and only?) way to do it is with the use of Material law 59 (CONNECT).
You will also need Property type 43 and /FAIL/CONNECT. Take a look at the reference guide.
