Beginner Recreating a Ditching Example

I am working on water impact analysis of various shapes. Part of the project is to simulate the impact using software (RADIOSS seems like an ideal tool for this). I noticed that Altair's library has a ditching example using SPH. http://www.altairuniversity.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Example_22.pdf

I would like to recreate the example. Considering that I am completely new to the software, what would be the best way to accomplish this? The example above doesn't explicitly state what steps are taken for creating the model - what resources would you recommend to help me recreate the example?

Thanks for the help!

    Hi,

You can use the example model files to start with along side with the pdf.

Is it possible to remesh example 22 so that I am under the 10,000 node limit for the student version?

Additionally, what are the steps needed to creating the silent boundary around SPH?

    Hi MEStudent,

yes, you can remesh to control the number of nodes.

Anyways, HypeWorks 14.0 Student Edition is out and supports upto 100K nodes. Give it a try :)/emoticons/default_smile.png' srcset='/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x' title=':)' width='20'>

    Thank you for your response.

I installed the new 14.0 student edition but I am getting a license error even though I put the altair_license.dat file in the security folder. I checked the ethernet id which is correct. What could be the issue here?

    Hi,

Please order for a 14.0 Student Edition license in order to use 14.0 SE.

Please refer to the link http://www.altairuniversity.com/get-the-free-hyperworks-14-0-student-edition/

Thanks, I did try downloading the license file through there. There are three license files that I tried (attached picture) but none of them seems to work. When I open them in notepad it says they are for version 13.0?

Edit. I realized the name should be altair_lic.dat instead of altair_lic. Now I am getting a different error:

    Altair License Manager: License error

Okay I solved it and now I have Hyperworks 14.0 successfully installed.

I can run example 22 just fine now because of the 100k extended limitation! However, when I try to view the results I get the following errors:

    8 Error:
                  8 Error:   Hyper3D Reader:LoadModel - HyperWorks Student Edition
                  error: FE
Position Definitions exceed 100000 maximum nodes

       9 Error:
9 Error:   Error: failed to read model from 'model' resource.

What's the issue here? The example model has about 30k nodes so this should not be an issue? And what does the last error mean?

    Hi,

I am able to run the model and view the results in HyperView without any error.

Can you share the model file?

I shared the model files in your dropbox

    Hi,

The reason why you don't see any animation file is because, the event run time is zero in your simulation.

Chnage the Tstop value in ENG/RUN as shown in the image below:

Great, I got the animation to work now. How could I view the numerical pressure values along the side of the wedge for a certain time?

    Hi,

You can use ANIM/(SHELL or BRICK)/P to output pressure to H3D FILE.

Is there a way to actually get numerical pressure data? Something that could be put into spreadsheet format?

Edit. I will also add that I am getting the following error messages when I try to open H3D file with hyperview.

I did some research and the 'GLSL program failed to link.' error messages are apparently caused by the graphics card. I made sure my graphics card is updated but I am still getting the same error. I can see the animation but I can't map any values such as pressure. Additionally the shell elements visually disappear when I click play. I can only see the rigid body impacting SPH.
