Meshing strategy for a truss joint

I'm working on my thesis and I'd like to have your comments regarding meshing.

- the part to be analyzed is a joint from steel truss (1/4 modelled)

- Abaqus solver

- I want to use as many brick elements as possible (C3D8R)

Simplest solution would be to use shell elements but I want to model the welds too. Welds (orange color) will have different material properties than other pats.

What is the best way to 'slice up' this kind of model and what's the best way to mesh it?

Hi,

Your model looks like simple for Hex meshing.You should go for 3d page Solid map option.Convert solid in to mappable volume using solid edit commmand.

Hello,

I'm somewhat familiar with solid mapping. However, I'm not able to change 'lvl2' part to a mappable solid. I know I should use trim/split/boolean functions to do this, but something's wrong. HM says 'At 0/7 solid. Solid 2: Non-mappable (2): along faces form 0 loops, need 1.'

Solid isn't closed volume or what? How do I fix this?

See attached screenshot & hm file.I able to convert it into mappable solid using solid edit with sweep lines.

This is how far I was able to create a decent quality mesh. I need to study more how I can make the solids mappable.. or maybe you have some hints for me?

Your method is wrong. For mapping meshing in this case, you have to begin mesh the weld firstly.

When weld's mesh done, you continue with tube parts who have direct connection to the weld. This is important step to make sure the coindent mesh between parts.

The rest of structure is too simple to finish the work.
