Hi,

I have a problem with a simple type12 interface between two ALE materials :

ERROR ID :           81
** ERROR IN INTERFACE
DESCRIPTION :
   -- INTERFACE ID : 1
   -- INTERFACE TITLE : inter
TIED INTERFACE: SLAVE NODE(S) OUTSIDE MASTER SEGMENT

I defined the surfaces of the interface with LineSeg (nodes on edge) but I changed manually the /LINE/SEG in /SURF/SEG in the 0000.rad...

The card of my interface is :

## FLUID Interface - connects 2 fluid meshes
##--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
##HMGROUP  1 11
/INTER/TYPE12/1
inter
         1         2

    Hi,

As per the reference guide, Each master segment needs at least on slave node on the opposite surface.

Except for formulation ITIED =1 user has to check that interface nodes are facing the corresponding surface.

    Please check this.

Thanks for your answer, I changed the way to mesh the component corresponding to the master and the solver ran without error (see file attached) !
However, this interface (type12) between my two ALE materials (or Eulerian) doesn't let the shockwave or any material flow pass from my first ALE (an explosive) to the second one (copper)...Do you know an interface type for modeling such an interface between two ALE (or a method to allow a material flow with the type12) ?

Could you share us complete input files with engine parameters?

    Regards

    Hi,

You are using 2d elements for ALE and some property are not assigned to elements.

Type 12 needs solid element and some modelling guideline which you have not followed in your model.

Please refer user guide and try.See attached pdf.

    Regards

    Hi,

Thank you very much for the quality of your answer, I tried with 3D elements and with the advices of your pdf and it worked.

In fact I would like to model the effect of an explosive device on a copper plate. Consequently I used two type 12 interfaces, the first one is between the explosive and the copper plate and the other one between the plate and the air. In the simulation the plate seems to be deformed slightly (on the density view) but the engine's time step is reduced rapidly and an error is found...

Could you please help me again ?

    Thanks & regards

    Hello everyone,

I have a very similar problem where the interface TYPE 12 is not working at all !

I am working on a model with an interface between RDX(ALE) and a metal(LAGRANGIAN). I am trying in vain..to use Interface TYPE 12.

You can find attached the files of my simulation.

    Could you please help ?

    Hi,

Type 12 contact is for ALE vs. ALE. Use Type 1 contact interface for a fixed contact type or Type 18 for penalty, between an ALE and Lagrangian part.

The corrected files are attached along.

Do you think using a TYPE 2 for my ALE/LAGRANGIAN interface is correct ?

TYPE 1 and TYPE 18 could work but the wave is not spraying...

    Hi,

For this type of application (explosion), it would be better to use the interface /INTER/TYPE18. The contact stiffness need to be well defined according the equation defined in the reference manual. An example is available in the documentation : RD-E: 5000 INIVOL and Fluid Structure Interaction (Drop Container).

Thanks ! Just one last question, how can I open the imput files in tutorial examples :  <install_directory>/demos/hwsolvers/radioss/50_invol_and_fluid_structure_interaction/fsi_drop_container*

    Hi,

Normally this folder comes with the installation but it will not be available for Student Edition users.

But you can download all the model files accompaniment to the tutorials in Help from https://altairuniversity.com/model-files-for-student-edition-users-accompaniment-to-the-tutorials-in-help/
