Number of Iterations for Topology Optimization

Hello. I've been running a few topology optimizations recently and have noticed that some models will become optimized within 5-8 iterations, while some require 50+.

Is there a reason for this? I'm concerned at how it is possible for a model to become fully optimized after sometimes so few iterations.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Please refer to Gradient-based Optimization Method  in OptiStruct users guide.

    Hi,

Please refer to Gradient-based Optimization Method  in OptiStruct users guide.

Ok, I read that regular convergence occurs when two consecutive iterations see a change in the objective tolerance and constraint violations of less than 1%. I understand that this can occur I as few as 3 iterations but what I'm asking is: is this a typical result of topology optimization in OptiStruct?

Depending on your model, your optimization parameters, and your objective? Yes, 3 iterations could lead to an 'optimal result'. If you're not satisfied with the answer, try changing your constraints around or re-working the boundary conditions for your problem.
