Tensile Test

Happy Monday,

Dear all,

If we have 'part' and then we would like to know, how strong it is (let say, I would like to know, in load .... Newton it would be broken). Is it possible? whether in radioss or optistruct.

If you have a tutorial or ever do the project like what I mean above please share 'the know how'.

Hi,

You can simulate the breaking effect in RADIOSS, provided you should have all the required material parameters for it. For material law 2 (elasto-plastic, Johnson Cook material), the failure parameter is maximum plastic strain. With the other basic material parameters (E, nu and rho), if you provide the maximum plastic strain the component will break. But these values have to be determined experimentally.

With the structural simulations, we can determine the strength and stiffness of a part by evaluating the component stress and deformations. The type of structural analysis you perform depends on the part being tested, the nature of the loads, and the expected failure mode, that is a short structure will most likely fail due to material failure (the yield stress is exceeded).and a long slender structure will fail due to structural instability (buckling).

So, without maximum strain value that the value have to be determined experimentally we cannot use RADIOSS to simulate the breaking effect?

Hi,

The maximum failure strain is the failure parameter and without this you cannot simulate breaking effect. Similarly we have dedicated failure cards available in RADIOSS For eg,/FAIL/JOHNSON describes the failure criteria by Johnson-Cook failure model but material damage parameters D1. D2 and D3 has to calculated. Using this card, element rupture can be simulated. Another failure card is/FAIL/FLD and in this card crack initiation and propogation can be simulated if the user has the forming limit diagram. Similarly many failure cards are available in RADIOSS.

Please go through Example 26- Ruptured Plate in our Help Menu where both these cards are used.

Okay, I got your explanation.

Basically we need material's properties data (Rho, NU, E, etc) and it's behavior to simulate rupture or another failure criteria.
