Monarch Classic 2025 keeps resetting my field lengths.

I am attempting to import a data file, but need to set custom field lengths as the fields may sometimes be longer than what Monarch (2025.0, 64-bit) is defaulting them to. However, every time I move to a new field, it reverts the previous one to the original default length assigned by Monarch. This is maddening. Is this a known issue?

Sorry you are running into this issue.

Could you be a bit more specific about such things as what type of file you are importing and exactly what steps you are taking to import it, with screenshots showing the fields which keep reverting?

Thank you for your help. Here is an example of what I am doing.

File > Open > Database > Computer
Navigate to file
Define and import data (Monarch auto-detects pipe as the delimiter) > Accept
Database Fields
2nd field is set to character, size 19.

I set it to 20.

I click on another field.

I click back to the 2nd field. It is now showing 18.

After Making Change and then Clicking to Another Field and then Clicking Back.png

I'm afraid in my own Monarch Classic 2025.0, with my own pipe-separated csv file, I am unable to reproduce what you are seeing.

Would you like to attach your actual input file and I will try again with that?

Unfortunately I cannot do that as it contains some proprietary customer information we are not allowed to disclose.

When I have time I can try to put together a small sample file with the sensitive information masked, and if that still produces the same issue I can send you that.

Here is a sample file, for which I was able to reproduce the issue with one field. I made the following changes to character field lengths:

LoginName: 13
ActionID: 50
ShortName: 30
WSID: 50
ClientAddress: 16
GTShortname: 20

With the last one (GTShortname) the value reverts if I click on another field and then click back to it. Sometimes it takes more than one back-and-forth click to trigger it.

Hi @CForman , Thanks for sending the test file. Unfortunately I still cannot get the behavior to happen. If you are able to send me a recording of this happening for you, then I could make sure I was doing exactly the same thing you were doing. Please start the recording before starting up Monarch so that the recording covers the entire behavior.

Please also turn the logging level all the way up to DEBUG. This is done from the initial Monarch screen by selection the Options icon in the upper left corner of the screen, just below the File Tab, then the Advanced tab, then select Debug from the Log Level drop down and then hit Accept.

and then reproduce the behavior. (Depending on how big the log files get, you may wish to reset that value to something lower once you are no longer trying to debug this issue.

Then reproduce the issue, loading the file, setting the field lengths, and seeing them revert on their own. And then close Monarch before ending the recording. After closing Monarch, please also grab the C:\Users\Public\Documents\Altair Monarch\DWMonarch-<timestamp>.log file and send that to me as well.
