Mappable one direction three direction

In my sense, probably not right or only limited for some cases, mappable in one direction means we can start from one end and drag it along a line until the other end where has a similar shape and this process completes a volume. So I understand why we call a cube is 3 direction mappable( see attached), but for the other one with a splitting corner, I cannot see which end to start and which line it should goes.  For the second picture, I understand what is going on for the left figure, but don't know why it is split in the other way(right one). Hope someone can give me an answer. Thanks in advance.

    steveivy,

Follow the steps with the images below, this will illustrate to you the direction the cube is mappable in,

    These are our necessary inputs

    We choose our solid

Then the source surface will be

Then our destination surface will be

And hence we get our mesh

Regarding the second question, the idea is to split the geometry into mappable regions by using as few edits as possible, the image on the left although mappable is made mappable by using many edits to the geometry, the image on the right is also mappable despite having inclined faces, and requires very few edits
