Snug fit between 3D meshes?

I have 2 stl files that are a snug fit with each other (eg: cap on a pen). When I mesh the two, the contacting surfaces are no longer a snug fit and there are irregularities and gaps. Is there a way to correct this and make the 2 meshed surfaces of the objects fit together?

Mesh imprint may help you, see -

Thank you so much!  What is a good way to check whether it's actually fitting together or not? The particular geometries include a lot of nodes and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to just verify by eye.

Also, is there a way to check why it fails to imprint?

If your analyis is not so big, try to run it and then check displacement card. If there's discontinuity of displacement, it's not good.

To add to above post, you can also check for contact forces to validate.
