Increase thickness locally for a 2D mesh

I would like to increase thickness in some areas of my model. Currently, I have a 2D mesh with uniform thickness . Appreciate if someone can tell me the best way to solve this problem. I have tried extracting midsurface but keep getting errors.

    Mid surface extraction should work fine if geometry is uniform.It struggles when geometry is too complex. Could you share screenshot of error while extracting mid surface?
