complex far field source in winprop

Hello,

Simulating the propagation of a phased array antenna into a rural environment, I imported the far field from Feko to Winprop Proman. I see that Proman discards information concerning the far field phase. In other words, it retains only the magnitude out of the complex Feko far field data. I could retrive this information with involved manipulations of the .str file, but this is far from ideal.

Should one treat this scenario in some other way? Or, is there a reason for such a limitation in the software?

You can directly import the .ffe file as Antenna Pattern (for Site or MS) In the ProMan setting without changing it to .apb file.

I think ProMan also considers the phase information of the far-field patterns as well as the magnitude, since the .str file includes the received power and phase difference of each ray path.

Why did you think ProMan discard the phase? Did you check any result from your phased antenna patterns?

the procedure, as far as I have understood it, is to import far fields (which are complex) from Feko into Aman, then the .apb file into Proman. But the .apb file is reduced to just a gain, the phase is lost.

now that I imported directly .ffe files, I still see that the rays computed in PROMAN do not account for the antenna phase in emission. Received power and phase difference for each ray are relative to the interactions it had in propagation, regardless of the initial phase. In another thread you already gave guidance on this topic, like including a so-called .apa file in AMAN. Can you detail the procedure please? It is not clear to me in that thread.

My final target is to get each ray to "remember" its initial phase generated from the antenna array.

I could show you how ProMan considers the initial phase of the .ffe antenna pattern file with a simple example.

But, I think the best way is to investigate your WinProp model.

Could you share your WinProp model in the format of the zip file as I asked before?

and please explain which result I need to observe to understand your issue with the phase?

here the model. In feko I define a source which is giving a field with this phase distribution. You can see that negative angles have a pi jump w.r.t. positive angles.

I inject the .ffe in winprop and perform the same kind of request through a simple ray tracing (just direct ray, nothing else).

Since one cannot directly plot the phase in winprop, I read the .str file and plot the phase. After conversion from cartesian to spherical coordinates, here is what I get:

I see the .str file is providing the time delay, phase and complex fields, nevertheless none of these seem to include the phase given by the source.

If it is a mistake from my side, I would like to know where to look at to retrive this information.

Hello @nicolo,

To include the phase of the Tx antenna, you need to select the Full polarimetric analysis at the beginning of the Proman project setting.

(Originally, the polarimetric analysis allows the users to consider the polarization of the antenna (theta, phi) in the simulation.

You can't change the polarimetric setting from Standard to Full … after making the project.)

Then you can see the different phase along the trajectory.
