How is the Power value calculated?
Hi all,
i want to study the power consumption in my mixer during mixing. Conveniently EDEM gives this value but i noticed a discrepance when i calculated the Power consumption with the torque via the formula P = 2*Pi*n*torque, resulting in higher values for power.
So i'm wondering how EDEM calculates the power value? And which one is correct obviously..
Thanks a lot!

Hi Renan,
interesting! Is there some theory or source behind this calculation? I can not find anything in the manual. I found that the value can be positive or negative it's mostly negative in my simuations, is there some theory as to what a negative value for power means?
Thanks!
Hi Clemens,
Negative power indicates, power required to drive particles.
Thanks,

Hi Clemens,
The geometry power in EDEM is calculated according to the following equation:
Power = Force*velocity + Torque*angular_velocity

Hi Clemens,
Power can be defined as the rate of doing work or the energy that is consumed by unit time. Based on this we can write:
P = W/t
where P is the Power, W is the work done by the force and t is the time. Since work can be calculated as the dot product between the force and the displacement, we can write:
P = (F . d)/t
Finally, since the velocity is defined as displacement over time, we can write:
P = F . v
So the power can be calculated as the dot product between the force and the velocity. Negative values for power means that force and velocity have opposite directions.
Hope this helps you.
Best regards,
Renan
