Different Steering Angle Limits for Left and Right Steering

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask whether it is possible to define different maximum steering angles for left and right steering. When I run a K&C event, I can only find one parameter for the maximum steering angle, which seems to be applied symmetrically in both directions.

Is there any way to specify different limits for left and right steering?

There is a way to modify the steering angle while turning the wheel to the left and right. To do this, you will need to change the Simulation Mode to "User Defined."

In this mode, you can manually enter your own signal inputs.

I created a quick example in which the steering wheel turns 360 degrees to the right and then 280 degrees to the left.

Depending on what other events you are running as part of your K&C analysis, I would recommend running those events using the "Predefined" mode and performing the steering analysis as a separate simulation. This way, you won't need to manually define all of the signal inputs required for the other events.

That is correct, F2 is the Steering Angle and F3 is the Steering Torque

Are you referring to a steering analysis that is in 2023.1? We have updated the analysis’s, so the only axle level is the steering analysis in KnC and the Tire Envelope analysis. I highly suggest updating to the most recent version (2026.1).

The Altair Driver is not needed in a KNC simulation. Are you using a full vehicle for your KNC or just a single axle model?

Yes, this updated KnC Analysis is available in the newer releases. I would recommend upgrading to our latest release, 2026.1.

With the new KnC Analysis, you can perform a KnC analysis not only on a single axle but also on a full vehicle. The event automatically detects all tires in the model and creates a corresponding post for each one, making it much easier to evaluate a full vehicle KnC event.

You can either perform a steering analysis on the front axle or the full vehicle.

I have a few questions regarding the steering torque calculation and the difference between the KnC event and the Front Axle Steering Analysis.

First, I noticed there is an output called Steering Angle and Torque, where F2 represents the steering angle and F3 represents the torque. Since F3 is obtained using the TZ() function to extract the moment from the Steering Wheel Joint, is it correct to interpret F3 as the steering torque?

For the Front Axle Steering Analysis, I found a force entity called Steering Actuator, which calculates the steering moment. However, I cannot find this force entity in the KnC event. My assumption is that its functionality is integrated into the Altair Driver block.

This leads to a few questions:

When both Motion and Force are used simultaneously for steering, where is the controller error (the difference between the steering command and the feedback) applied? Is it applied to the Motion or to the Force, or both?
Which quantity represents the actual steering torque required to turn the wheels: F3 from the Steering Angle and Torque output, or the torque generated by the Steering Actuator?
When running a KnC event with only the Steering Analysis activated, is the steering Motion deactivated while the Steering Actuator activated?

Finally, I would like to understand the role of the Altair Driver in KnC simulations. Why is the Altair Driver required to run a KnC event, whereas it is not needed for the Front Axle Steering Analysis?

I also noticed that, during the KnC event, F3 in the Steering Angle and Torque output appears to have feedback value, while in the Front Axle Steering Analysis it does not seem to have any feedback signal. Could you please explain the reason for this difference?

I am using the full vehicle model in MotionSolve 2023.1, and I noticed that even when I deactivate the Altair Driver and run a K&C event, the Altair Driver is automatically enabled during the simulation.

For only a front axle steering analysis, I admit that the Altair Driver should not be required. However, the F3 outputs for Steering Angle and Steering Torque only return feedback values, as shown in the plot below.

I would like to understand the role of the Steering Actuator Force in this case. The green line plot is the result of the following function. Is it the steering torque? If it is, so what about the F3 in Steering Angle and Torque?
