Particles get stuck in Geometry

Hello all,

i have again the problem that small particles get pushed into and stuck in my geometry. I'm simulating an extruder this time. I had a similiar issue with a different mixing device where it was sufficient to max out the Young's Modulus of the Equipment material at 1e14. Unfortunately this time it doesn't work anymore, particles get stuck inside the extruder screws (see pic).. Is there anything else to pay attention to?

Thanks a lot!image

    Hi Clemens,

Sometimes this happens when particles get impinged in a small gap between two geometries. If you have a small gap between the screw and the case, eliminating it by shrinking the case slightly or expanding the screw radially may resolve the issue or atleast reduce the amount of particle penetration. The impingement may also be happening in another region such as the corrner where the screw and vertical chute intersect so it is worth playing through the simulation video and examining visually where the penetration occurs.

Stiffening the geometry further and also stiffening the particles may help. As a last resort I sometimes add a second geometry surface behind the original geometry surface with an offset of half the minumum particle diameter. However, it is best to try and resolve the impingement.

    Best regards,

    Stefan
