EDEM: Problems with showing particle collision on Microsoft Surface Book 2

Hi all,

When I run a simple 2 particle collision on Altair EDEM 2024.0.1 with particles (radius=5 mm) in a box (10x10x10 mm) it looks like the particles are smaller. Since the particle has diameter 10mm it should fill the complete box. See screenshot below:

Furthermore, when performing the collision, it looks like the particles not touch each other.

However, when my teacher runs the exact same file the particles actually do fill up the complete box and touch each other as expected. See screenshot below:

According to my teacher, all my settings of the project are good. Does someone have an idea why this happens on my Microsoft Surface Book? I tried version 2024.1 and 2024.0.1 and both have this issue.

Hi Lukas

There could be a couple of reasons:

Ensure if the box that you have in your simulation is of type 'Virtual' and not 'Physical'.
Ensure that your particle definition does not have a size distribution, and is a fixed size distribution.
If you are using 'Volume Packing' for your factory, ensure that you do not have 'Shrink Overlapped Particles' checked.

Both boxes are virtual
Both particles have no size distribution and have a fixed size distribution
I'm not using 'Volume Packing'

What else could it be?

Hi, this could be a graphics issue? Try going to EDEM tools > Option > Rendering options and selecting 'legacy display'. Or if legacy is already selected try de-selecting this.

Also worth trying a differnet perspective if it's graphics. Instead of the default if you show X,Y or Z does it show what you expect?
