Request for Advice: Generating Single Instances of Multi-Sphere Templates in EDEM

Hello to all EDEM users and staff members.

I hope you’re all doing well. I have a question regarding particle generation that I’d like to ask for your advice on. I’ve imported a large number of multi-sphere particle templates, and I’m wondering if there’s a good method to ensure that each template generates exactly one instance during simulation.

As I’m still new to EDEM and not yet familiar with all its features, I’ve recently been experimenting with EDEMpy and IPluginParticleFactory, aiming to have each multi-sphere template produce just one corresponding particle during simulation.

Any guidance or suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your help!

Hi Gua Dong

One way to achieve this would be to use this different particle templates for different materials, and within the factory settings to generate the particles, you can limit the number of particles generated to be 1.

The other way would be to ensure that the 'Particle Ratios' within the 'Bulk Material Properties' are equal for all particles (for example, each particle is 10% if you have 10 different particles with different particle templates). Then, within your factory settings, you can limit the total number of particles to be generated to 10 (since you have 10 different particles). This will ensure you have 1 particle created for each of the template.

Actually, I only have multi-sphere particle templates of one material—I’m really sorry for forgetting to mention that earlier. It seems that the proportion of particle templates under each material is set to an even distribution by default, which means the factory generates particles from each template within a material uniformly.

@jerrinjobs Mr. jerrinjobs, I hope you don’t mind me following up with another question.

I’ve imported hundreds of multi-sphere particle templates with varying shapes (using batch import via EDEMpy library functions). If I set equal particle ratios in the particle properties and configure the factory to generate a total number of particles equal to the number of templates, would EDEM then generate exactly one particle per template during the simulation?

My concern stems from wanting only one instance per template: I’m unsure whether the particle ratio set in the properties represents the probability of the factory generating particles overall, or the probability of the factory selecting a specific template each time it generates a particle.

I would be very grateful if you could clarify this for me. If EDEM doesn’t select all templates uniformly in this scenario, I’d greatly appreciate any alternative methods you might recommend.
