long flexible body penetrates the geometric object

Hi Everyone,

I am studying the falling process of a long flexible body and need to ensure that the tail end of the long flexible body maintains a descent speed of 5 m/s. The long flexible body uses the fibers bonding model in EDEM 2025. The particles at the tail end of the long flexible body are set to a fixed velocity, while the other particles are not set to a fixed velocity. When the long flexible body collides with a geometric object, it begins to deform. However, after a period of time, the long flexible body penetrates the geometric object. The cause of the issue is not entirely clear. Do you have any good suggestions?

With the fixed velocity this is essentially infinite force. It looks like these particles are been pulled down, is the expectation that the end of the flexible material slides over and round the geometry?

The particles will be passing through as the force on the particles is directly related to the overlap with the geometry. As the overlap increases the force increases, however if the overlap increases to be greater than the particle radius, then it passes through.

If the flexible body does get caught, with the infinite force of the fixed velocity it will cause some unexpected behaviour depending on the settings.

In general there are a few options to resolve this, such as increasing the stiffness of the geometry (and/or the particles) so that a smaller overlap gives a greater force.

Have you configured the fibres model to break? Setting a breakage condition would allow the flexible material to break if the fibres get stuck and the force is too high.

Or if you want the fibre to slide over, and down, when pulled you could reduce increase the flexibility of the fibre to allow this, or reduce the particle-geometry static and rolling friction values to allow it to slide round rather than be pulled down.
