Hi all,
I'm using the Linear Cohesion V2 model in Altair EDEM and trying to identify a scientific source to cite. The model adds a cohesive force of the form:
F = k * A
where A = π * R * δ, with R the reduced radius and δ the normal overlap. The cohesion parameter k is defined in J/m³ (cohesion energy density), similar to how it's used in the SJKR2 model in LIGGGHTS.
I understand this is a simplified, linear alternative to JKR-type cohesion models, but I haven't found any scientific paper or derivation that explains or justifies this specific formulation, especially the use of energy density (J/m³) rather than surface energy (J/m²).
Does anyone know how to best justify this exact formulation or is there a paper to cite defending this model. I assume that EDEM has based the use of this formulation for their model on scientific literature.
Best,
