How do licenses drop off and what is this error?

Hi,

I'm IT support and I have some users in my building that use Monarch. I wanted to verify how licenses drop off from users and also why a user would have multiple licenses checked out a time? The other issue is this error that appeared for one of my users. I'd appreciate any information or help as I have never used this application nor do we have any documentation on it.

We're using Altair Monarch 2023 (19.1.0.34497).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but within Monarch are their modules/options and if a user is actively using/doing anything within, it also takes another license? So a user could take multiple licenses up if they're actively doing a lot of stuff within Monarch correct? Should the licenses drop from them if they close out Monarch?

Also, the users also get this error below which I believe is due to our shortage of licenses but I'd like verification.

You are correct about that error message. There are not enough units to launch Monarch. For v2023 you need 10 units and you only have 9 (9000/1000).

When a user launches Monarch, it will pull 10 Units (for v2023). If the same user launches another session on the same machine, it should level and appear they are only using 10 Units.

Users do have the ability to check out a license for X hours. This is configurable through the license manager. You can get more information from the help file:

Managed Licensing

Altair Units is a cloud-based managed licensing system that enables greater flexibility with your Altair licenses. Integrated with Altair One, Altair Units allow you to seamlessly access your Altair licenses with just an internet connection.

Launch your browser and then go to the Altair One Admin Portal at https://admin.altairone.com. Log in with your credentials.
Once logged in to the portal, navigate to User Profile > Authorized Machines.

Click Generate Auth Code.

The page refreshes to display the authorization code and a countdown of time left for authorization.

In the Altair Monarch License Manager, ensure that the Managed Licensing tab is selected in the Altair Units License Configuration screen and then click the Configure button .
In the Altair Units Configuration screen that displays, enter the Authorization Code you received in Step 3 into the field provided and then click Authorize.

If your machine is properly authorized, the following message displays.

Click OK and then close the screen when you are finished.
If you wish to enable license checkout (i.e., allow users to “check out” or “borrow” their license so that they can work with the Monarch applications offline), enter a maximum number of hours users can check out their license into the Advanced > Borrowing Duration field.
Choose an Optimization type (ideally ML or Auto) from the options available.

The Optimization setting reduces the time required by the licensing process to validate your license by instructing the application which target licensing platform to use as a licensing source. This setting is ignored if the “ALM_HHWU” environment variable is defined on your machine.

Click Connect in the Altair License Server Connection screen.

Monarch is successfully activated.

You have to manually check out the license for offline use. By default, as soon as you exit the Monarch application, the units will be automatically returned to the pool for use by other users.

What version of Monarch are your users using? I have never seen this error message but if you are using an older version, it may come from the fact it is trying to communicate with our old license servers that have been retired.

@ITsupport22 after saying I had never seen that error message, I also got something similar:

I clicked OK and tried launching again and Monarch opened. It may be a temporary glitch in the matrix today.

I appreciate the information you've given me. The ability to set a timer for license check out is nice but I'm afraid it'd be another annoyance for my users. So my last questions again would be that there is no way to return a license and if a user closes Monarch the licenses should free up for others to use correct?
