Here could someone tell me what is the unit of quantities we are using in hypermesh here? Like i made a 3d block here of 0.2 x 0.6 x 0.01 so what is this 0.2 or 0.6 or 0.01 is it metre is it centimetre or what is it?

Similarly if i am defining loads let's say an edge load of magnitude 1.0 as it is set by default so what is that? is it newton or some other quantity. Like in general also where do i go and refer about these units of quantities i am using

Similarly, in my topology optimisation output, i get contours of elemental densities so what is the unit of it, what is that quantity and most importantly where can i read about it

    Hi,
You need to use a consistent systems of units. For example, if you choose a metric system, the lengths will be in millimeters, the load forces in Newton and stresses in Mega Pascal. So, you might input the values considering this unit base.

My question still remains how do i set this unit system or find out in altair hyperworks what unit system my software is already assuming

    Hi,

The unit depends on the value you have entered in material properties. For example, if you have entered E value as 2.1e5 for steel it is in MPA unit, if it is 210 then GPA unit and if 2.1e11 it is in Pa. Then you need to follow the corresponding mass, length and time. Please refer the attached image for consistent unit system.

Another way is by measuring the length you can come to know what unit is it. Example: if your component is a bottle, when you measure the height if it shows 0.3 then you can interpret the CAD to be in meter (considering usual bottle height is 30cm). In that case either you need to enter your material property in meter unit or you can scale it by 1000 to go with mm unit.

The common unit followed in FEA is mm, Sec, Ton which is the 1st column in the attached pic.

Hope this is clear for you.

The unit system used in HyperMesh software is determined by the material properties you have entered. You must specify other units in the unit system in which you have entered the material properties.
