I need to import .stl files into hypermesh (free student edition) but there isn't an option for this.

Are you trying to use the classic HyperMesh Desktop interface? In the student version that is limited to iges, step and solidworks import. Try the new HyperWorks interface, it offers more options.

If doing it as an import instead of open stl is under solver deck instead of geometry.  I have missed it because of this in the past.

As Paul mentioned if you use the HyperMesh client in HyperWorks you can click on the folder icon in the upper left and the file type options should show this:

That used to be the case but In more recent versions (at least since 2021.2), stl is available under both geometry and solver deck import options
