How can I solve the problem of importing CAD geometry?

Hey everyone!

I am having an issue importing geometry in the STP format. Unfortunately, the loading process gets stuck at 2% and doesn't progress further. Even the model I had successfully imported into EDEM is now not getting loaded. I've tried it on three different software versions, but the problem persists.

If anyone has any idea what is causing this issue, I would be grateful for your help!

Hi Iwona,

Is this for a geometry or particle file? Sometimes the meshing can be a problem, it usually defaults to a good mesh but you can choose the manual option for this and check the different mesh size.

Also worth trying the unit types, CAD units will automatically detect the units if they are written to the file but if not it would likely default to meters, so you can try specifically setting the units for the import.

Great to hear from you. It is a geometry file. I've been experimenting with different mesh sizes and units, but unfortunately, it isn't cooperating. Do you have any other suggestions? I really appreciate your help.

Hi Iwona,

The models import OK for me on Windows using 2023.1 version. I've attached the EDEM files with the two geometries imported using CAD units so you can use if needed.

It could be file location causing the import problems for you, could you try a location with no special characters of if there is a long file path try importing from a location with shorter file path.

You can also try changing the 'temp file' location by going to EDEM Tools > Options > File Locations and select 'Geometry Import Temporary File Location Override" and put in a custom location for the temp file. This is used as EDEM reads the .stp file, writes it to the temp file location as a .dme and then reads this .dme file in, so if there is a problem with the location this helps.
