ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on providing a valid technique to calibrate the material parameters in discrete element method (DEM) simulations and quantifying the “tuned” material model on a meso-scale conveyor impact transfer station. Quantitative measurements and qualitative observations are provided to determine the accuracy of the reaction forces and the bulk material trajectories between conventional continuum mechanics, DEM and experimental data. The effects of scaling-up the material model in DEM simulations are evaluated to examine possible procedures to optimise DEM simulations.
