Energy Representation for the Unified Comminution Model

ABSTRACT
To develop a unified comminution model (UCM) a description of the energy distribution of collisions in the comminution devices is required. The discrete element method (DEM) has been used as the tool to simulate this. The type of data that needs to be extracted for use in breakage modeling is different from that required for most particle flow applications that utilize DEM outputs. In collaboration with DEM Solutions the EDEM code has been modified to provide the required data. A simple two-parameter equation has been formulated to provide a generic description of the energy distributions, as this should provide a useful technique to populate the energy information required for a range of particle sizes and population distributions in the mill load. However, there are still a number of unresolved issues that are being tackled to improve the power of utilizing DEM outputs in breakage modeling.
