Implementation of Simulation-Driven Design at Leonardo
Presentation by Fabio Angioloini, Airframe Structures and New Technology & Material Lead at Leonardo.
Leonadro Helicopters worked on a huge weight reduction campaign on AW 189 on both metallic and composite structures, as well as on cost reduction trading-off metallic Vs. composite structure on AW 169 horizontal stabilizer. On the other side Leonardo Airborne and Space developed the new composite lay-up of Falco 48 fuselage using Optimization tools since the very early concept phase.
Both division of Leonardo are approaching via Simulation-Driven Design the new challenges of ALM (Additive Layer Manufacturing) design. Several components were re-designed for ALM, where important mass reduction or part consolidation were achieved, meeting mechanical performance requirements.
