Automatic part recognition saves time.  HyperWorks brings machine learning-powered shapeAI technology to every user.

I remember being taught in my fist finite element class that the finite element method consists of three steps: pre-processing, solving, and post-processing.  The class focused on the math of solving and, to a lesser extent, post-processing.  This led me to believe that those two steps accounted for most of an analyst’s time.  Once I started working, I realized that the pre-processing step takes the longest time and is truly the bottleneck of the whole process.  Much of this model build work is both tedious and error prone, and it often doesn’t have much to do with the actual engineering design (if we are honest).  I have previously discussed how Altair’s shapeAI technology can save time in pre-processing by grouping or identifying parts within assemblies.  New to HyperWorks 2022.3, part classification workflows powered by shapeAI is available in the standard interface without any customization.

The classify button is available on the Assembly page.  The workflow is broken down into three easy-to-use steps: label, train, and classify.

Label

The label guidebar allows the user to create and maintain datasets of labeled parts.  Simply choose the active dataset, part label, and click add.

Train

The train guidebar’s simplicity hides its true power.  Simply click train with a chosen dataset.  The magic happens behind the scenes.  shapeAI partitions the data into train and test sets, automatically applies the best machine learning algorithm, and presents training results to assess the trained model’s quality.  This one-click solution puts powerful machine learning in the hands of every HyperWorks user.

Classify

The last step of the process allows a user to select a trained model and predict part labels on new parts.  The already trained models can be shared between users to leverage the learning across an organization.

Classifying parts saves time when building new finite element models.  Some pre-processing time can be eliminated by removing unmodeled parts, automating mesh generation based on part types, or realizing connections.   Everyone can try out the newly democratized shapeAI classification workflows in HyperWorks 2022.3.
