Altair Inspire® Challenge #6: Lilly Pad Optimization

This challenge is to run a topology optimization on the base of the Water Lilly Pad that is supported at its centre, with water pressure loads in the vertical and horizontal directions.

Note that the location of the ribs in nature is not purely based off of achieving maximum stiffness, or minimum mass, but also considers nutrient transport, and other functions necessary to the plant.  We will be focusing exclusively on the structural aspects of the rib layout for this challenge.  Your objective is to maximize the stiffness while reducing mass.

The attached STMOD file is your starting point.  Feel free to adjust the design space, manufacturing constraints, and optimization settings to come up with the ideal massing.

Level: Easy

Product Required: Altair Inspire

The solution can be attached in the comment section of this post. The desired output format is a PNG or JPG showing the optimized rib layout, and analysis results.

The solution to Challenge Prosthetic Knee Motion Analysis can be found here: https://community.altair.com/community?id=community_blog&sys_id=49d2c6271b59fd10c4dfdbd9dc4bcb0b

Hi Mathew & everyone, i found this tricky, the optimization solution does leaves a huge gap between the outer ring (partition) and the design space. Please advice

    Hi there,

Have you experimented with different min and max thickness values?  Do you notice a different distribution of the optimized massing?  In the interest of fairness for this challenge, I do not want to give too much away, but that may be something worth investigating.

    Dear sir,

I have done optimization of Lilly pad in three different ways (by changing manufacturing constraints, and optimization settings).  please check the resultsimageimageimage

    Ok,

    Here is my try:

    1. basic

    image

    2. With Frequency Constraints

    image

    3. Topography optimation

    image

    4. With only 3 sectors in shape control
