Altair® EDEM™ 2022.2 is available from the Altair Marketplace. In this latest release, we have secured Altair as the market-leading solution for off-road mobility simulation by enabling key capabilities with the multi-GPU CUDA solver for modelling vehicle dynamics in large simulations.

Performance, performance, performance…

As I mentioned in my end-of-year blog, the performance increase of the multi-GPU CUDA solver was our most important advancement for EDEM last year. First introduced in EDEM 2022.0, our team have been working hard to enable most of the capabilities already available in EDEM to work with the new solver and benefit from its high-performance boost during the following releases.

I am delighted to announce that with EDEM 2022.2, we have continued this transition with new capabilities enabled for the multi-GPU CUDA solvers. In this release, with special emphasis on off-road mobility applications:

Dynamic Domain

This feature allows only activating and calculating particles in a sub-domain controlled by EDEM motion or 3rd party couplings. This considerably reduces the computational costs in applications commonly used in agriculture, off-highway and off-road mobility applications.

Geometry Deformation

The geometry deformation has been updated to support the CUDA Solver to allow the possibility of having wear-based and custom geometry deformations through the couplings and user models via the API. This allows Altair® MotionSolve® and other Multi-body Dynamics coupling to benefit from the performance boost provided by multi-GPU Solver.

PM FlexTire® coupling

The use of Pratt Miller’s Flexible-Tire Model (PM FlexTire®) has been a great addition to the off-road mobility sector, including for off-highway, defence, and agricultural machinery. Even with the FlexTire still based on CPU, the Geometry Deformation capability can now be used with the CUDA GPU solver, allowing simulations to benefit from the speed benefits of the faster GPU solver.

What else?

Together with all the new capabilities associated with the multi-GPU solvers, we have continued adding new capabilities for analysis and customization:

New Flexible Fibres Analysis

More detailed analysis of flexible fibres has been added to the Analyst. These allow the post-processing on flexible fibres (meta-particles), including colouring, graphing and data export of different attributes like length (based on bounding-box, extent, or distance), mass, volume, number of elements and position.

Updated EDEMpy Setting

We have continued adding simulation set-up capabilities that make EDEMpy more powerful to automate multiple simulations based on Python scripts.

Integration updates

In parallel with the additions and updates in this release, we have continued working on integrating EDEM with other Altair products to offer a more complete solution. The main improvements include:

EDEM-MotionSolve coupling

This now allows a sync stop and restart in both software.

New AcuSolve 3-phase model available for EDEM-AcuSolve coupling

The new three-phase model allows users to simulate free-surface fluid flows coupled with particles. This is particularly useful in applications for metals manufacturing, minerals processing and other processes. More details can be found on the CFD Solvers 2022.2 release notes under "New Features".
