Co-simulation Altair MotionSolve, EDEM, MATLAB/Simulink using Altair Activate

Hello Altair team,

I would like to simulate an electric off-road vehicle in severe road conditions. This task requires to use of different tools to solve different parts of vehicle dynamics. I am going to use EDEM for wheel-terrain interaction, MotionSolve - for vehicle body simulation, MATLAB - for an electrical drive simulation. Could I couple this tool use Altair Activate? If yes, could you please provide any documentation on that?

Hello Taras,

This looks like an interesting topic, I would suggest you to replace Matlab with Activate for the Electrical Drive simulation, as the coupling is faster and also native.

Using Activate, there are already available examples that showcase the use of an Electric Powertrain coupled with MotionView/Solve Vehicles.

You may find the documentation about the Electric Powertrain model and how it can be integrated to your Vehicle in the following link, https://2021.help.altair.com/2021.2/hwdesktop/mv/topics/motionview/fmu_powertrain_r.htm

There are 2 approaches to your problem. You may:

Use Activate as the integration platform, meaning that the simulation is handled by Activate by running a Co-Simulation between: Activate & MotionSolve & EDEM. With this approach you may find the example Activate E-Powertrain model in your installation directory as:<install_dir>\hwdesktop\hw\mdl\mdllib\Common\FMU_Library\Motor\FMU_source\Activate_Models. Please note that this integration capability is available from 2021.2 version and onwards.

Use MotionSolve as the integration platform. This way, you need to export your Activate Powertrain Model as an FMU. MotionSolve will manage the total simulation between the FMU, EDEM and the Vehicle Multibody model. If you prefer this approach, there are example models in MotionView under Vehicle Tools-> Example Models (Electric Sports bike, Three Wheeler) that may help you understand the FMU coupling, or you could even use the Assembly Wizard to create a Full Vehicle with the Electric Powertrain from scratch. These are available from MS 2021.1 and onwards.

Please note that to find these files you need to have MotionView installed from the HyperWorks group package.

the model seems to be working in Activate, but can't be generated as fmu since the following error occurs, which is not super verbose:

ir_nWtpQT/masking_blk.ast:1:9997-9998: parsing error in call to function hwscpEngineUtilsAPIs_ScopeAutoMasking at line number 37 in file vssAutoMaskingSubSystem.oml >

Hi Andrzej,

The FMU generation error on this specific model seems to be a temporary issue with Activate version 2021.2

There are 2 possible workarounds,

If you have any previous Activate version you may export it from there

If you use Activate 2021.2, please comment the lines 13 to 16 in the context of the Diagram of the Superblock "Battery". Also in the model "Setup" please change the final time from "time_final" to 15.
