Exporting optimized solution to CAD
Dear Colleagues,
I am preparing my tutorial for the Virtual Academic Training Series and I am facing the following problem.
I did some first hand optimization using Inspire, now I would like to export the geometry I obtained and import into CAD software in order to re-design it. For that, I exported the optimized topology into Evolve. Using the Solidthinking Evolve I am trying to save it as .stp, .igs. .x_t, however every time I try the Evolve software gives me the following message 'Error saving file'.
The file (.evo) is in attached, I would like to know how could I export this to a CAD software.
Thank you for your help.
Best regards

Hi Vitor,
This is because you just have stl data in evolve while you are saving, you are not modifying the data i.e. create geometrical entities that can be written to iges or a parasolid format,
When in evolve you must use the stl model (which is actually your optimized shape) as a template, place a blank on it in evolve (so to speak) create your smooth model in evolve by removing material from this blank and then you can export the model to parasolid or iges etc

Please note In Inspire 2014 the latest version of inspire you can save the optimized geometry in any format directly, this allows easy interfacing with other CAD software.

You speak of applying this 'blank' and smoothing the result. Is there a quick easy way to do this? Currently my model has so many elements that any manipulation in Evolve takes forever to draw and often crashes.
Thanks for any advice!

Mika,
why not smooth it within inspire, (fit option) then save it to any CAD format and then take it to evolve?

Rahul,
Fit does not generate any workable geometry. It generates 1 small triangle.

Hello Mika,
With Inspire 2016, we can generate smooth geometry using the polynurbs tool.
Here is news about the release:
Hello,
Join the solidThinking team for an exciting overview and demo of Inspire 2016 on March 23, 2016. The latest release introduces groundbreaking PolyNURBS functionality allowing users to quickly and easily flow optimized designs into manufacturable products by wrapping topology results with NURBS geometry. Other key updates include:
· Results Comparisons — Easily compare results across multiple runs and loading scenarios in one table.
· New Load Types — Consider temperature loads, velocity, acceleration, G-loads, and enforced displacement to simulate precise loading conditions.
· Surface Optimization — Support for single thickness geometries allows Inspire to create optimizations for a broader range of applications.
