Creo geometry import creating assemblies for almost every part

Whenever I import an assembly Hypermesh is creating an assembly for almost every part.  The actually assemblies still work, but having 110 "assemblies" where there are only a handful makes locating the proper ones difficult.  The assembly hierarchy is also not tabbed, so without clicking them you cannot see what the assemblies are comprised of.  I've tried several combinations of import method, but get the same result each time.  This occurs when importing from a step file or a Creo assembly.

Is there a way to force assemblies to be only created for actual assemblies?

    Hi Tom,

Have you tried changing the hierarchy to Parts, then splitting by parts?

If you need to import by assemblies, does split by body give you anything different?

Importing by Part does not generate any assemblies at all.

For reference, I imported the same step file into 2017.2 and get the model tree, as I would expect

Found the issue.  You can change the display in the browser configuration.  Switching to Hierarchy displays as I would expect.
