Intersections and Penetrations

Dear all,

i have created an assembly with Shell Mesh. I have two questions

1. when I add thickness to a component, the sections where it has a sharp edge like L joint, the elements are getting Intersected. Can this intersection be neglected?

2. In my assembly there are particular locations where I have to connect one components nodes to other components nodes. Since these components have a shell mesh, when the thickness added, the added elements thickness gets penetrated. Are these allowed.

Please give your suggestions

    Hi Ushay,

It is always recommended to remove the intersections and penetrations before the run. These could result in weird behavior of the model.

We have a tutorial in Help Menu which shows removing intersections and penetrations, HM-3320: Penetration.

Hi George, thanks for your reply. I totally agree with you, however in the case I mentioned it is unavoidable.

    Hi Ushay,

If its an unavoidable case you can continue with the current set up and finally we can review the results.

What type of analysis you are trying to perform?.
